7th December

This is the second Sunday in Advent. Thank you, Loshe for lighting two Advent candles today.

The Junior Class talked about the shepherds' visit to baby Jesus. See Luke 2:8-20.

 

 

We also spent some time rehearsing for a short Christmas drama. More on this later . . .

 

 



30th November

This is the first Sunday of Advent. Thank you, Nimi for lighting our first Advent candle.

The Junior Class talked about the angel's visit to Mary, and made paper plate angels.

23rd November

We continued our discussion on the Parable of the Talents this week.
Many thanks to Lorraine for taking the Junior Class.

16th November

This week, both classes looked at the Parable of the Talents (or the Parable of the Gold Coins) in Luke 19:11-27.

We talked about how the coins in the story represent the talents or gifts we have, and how God wants us to use our gifts well and not waste them.

 

 

 

9th November

Continuing with the theme of learning from the Bible, the Junior Class looked at the story of Zaccheus (Luke 19:1-10).

2nd November

We talked today about how the Bible can be used for training us in righteousness.

The Junior Class looked at the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert, as told in Matthew 4:1-11.

 

 

When the devil tried to tempt Jesus to do wrong, He referred to what the scriptures said. We can use the Bible to help us decide what is right and wrong.

26th October

This week, we talked about how the Bible can be used to correct us when we make mistakes.

Our memory verse was Job 5:17

Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. (Job 5:17)

The Junior Class looked at the story of Jonah and the whale. Jonah tried to run away when God asked him to preach at Nineveh. His experience showed him that he needed to obey God.

19th October

Many of the children were away this week, as it is the Edinburgh Schools' half-term holiday.

We watched a short video by AMOKArts Creative Arts Ministry about Matthew 7:1-5.

We talked about what Jesus meant when he said that you must take the plank out of your own eye before you try to take the speck out of your brother's eye.

The children then had a go at drawing and painting their own pictures.

12th October

This week, we talked about how the Bible can be used to rebuke. "Rebuke" is a word that we don't use much now. To rebuke someone means to criticise them.

The Junior Class looked at Luke 18:15-17, where Jesus rebukes (or criticises) his disciples for trying to stop the children bothering him.

The children did some artwork which reflected Jesus' love for each of them.

5th October

Today we started a four-week series based on 2 Timothy 3:16:

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness"

(New International Version - UK)

This week, the Junior Class looked at different kinds of books, for example, a dictionary, a textbook and a fiction book. We talked about what all these books were for. We then talked about how the Bible is made up of many different books, and how they help us learn in different ways. We talked about the parables that we'd looked at in previous weeks and how Jesus used these to teach.

28th September

Junior Class

We continued our discussion about the Parable of the Lost Son this week, focusing on the reaction of the elder son to the celebration of his brother's return.

 

Senior Class

 

Our main focus was also on the hardworking brother who stayed at home while his younger brother, who had collected his share of the father's wealth, spent it abroad, and returned home, hungry, broke and broken. 

We saw that the elder brother was not happy at their father's joy at the prodigal son's return - for two key reasons; firstly, he, the obedient and hardworking son had never gotten to 'party' with his friends. Secondly, he did not understand why the son who wasted the father's resources should be accepted back home - and with joyful celebrations. 

We noted that the elder son did not ask the father for any of what his brother requested and received. Despite the shortcomings of the prodigal son, he got what he asked for. Matthew 7:7 says we only receive when we ask - from our earthly father, and our Father in heaven. 

Learning from the elder brother in the parable of the prodigal son, we realise that we need to make our requests known to God. It is also important not to get angry because we see some person is blessed, or has received something we might want.  

21st September

Today we've been talking about the Parable of the Lost Son. We will continue our discussion about this parable next week.
