7th June

This week, we talked about the story of Joseph, using excerpts from the film, 'Joseph: King of Dreams' (2000).

You can read about this story in Genesis 37

The Bible says that Joseph's father loved him more than any of his other sons and made him an ornate robe. Joseph's brothers were so jealous of him that they sold him to merchants, who took him to Egypt.

For our craft activity, we made robe pictures using multicoloured mosaic squares.

31st May

Today, the Junior Class looked at the story of Isaac and Rebekah's twin sons, Jacob and Esau. You can read about this in Genesis 25:19 - 27:45.

We watched a film of this story, provided by Crossroads Kids' Club.

Our craft activity involved making a collage of a bowl of stew, which was significant in this story, as Esau sold his birthright (a special blessing reserved for the eldest son) to Jacob for a bowl of stew. Thank you to April's Homemaking for this idea.

17th and 24th May

17th May

The Junior Class talked about how Abraham and Sarah had to wait for God's timing for their son, Isaac, to be born. You can read about this in Genesis 18-21.

24th May

When Isaac was older, God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac to him. Abraham obeyed God's instructions, proving that he loved God more than anything else. Abraham didn't have to sacrifice Isaac in the end as God provided a ram for the sacrifice. You can read about this in Genesis 22:1-19

Thank you, Muriel, for leading these classes.

26th April - 17th May

On 26th April, we started a series of studies on the people mentioned in Hebrews 11. These people were all mentioned in this letter because they had faith.

26th April
The Junior Class talked about the story of Abel and his brother, Cain. Cain was jealous because God accepted Abel's offering, but not his, and he killed his brother.

3rd May
We talked about Noah. Noah had faith, because he built an ark (a boat), just as God asked him to.

10th May
We talked about Abraham, and how when God asked him to take his wife and everything he had to another country, he obeyed.

Friday, 17 April 2015

1st March - 12th April

We spent 1st and 8th March looking at some chapters from Proverbs.

On 15th March, we talked about the story of Job.

29th March was Palm Sunday. We talked about the story of Palm Sunday. We made palm branches using wooden sticks and green bubble paper, and took them with us into the service to wave while we sang the last song with the congregation.

5th April - Easter Sunday
Family Service

12th April
We talked about the Easter story.

Sunday, 15 February 2015

15th February

The junior and senior classes combined today, as many of the children were away. (This week is a school holiday in Edinburgh.)

We spent some time talking about selected verses in Proverbs.

There will be no Sunday School next week (22nd February).

Monday, 9 February 2015

8th February

Today, we started a series on Proverbs.

We began our lesson by looking at some pictures of road signs, like this one:

There is a book called "The Official Highway Code", which is full of signs like this. It helps drivers of motor vehicles to drive correctly and safely.

In some ways, Proverbs is a little like this book. It is full of rules that help us to live well. We selected six verses from Proverbs to look at this week, and had a go at creating 'road signs' to illustrate them.

Sunday, 1 February 2015

1st February

Today, we talked about another person who changed completely after meeting Jesus.

Saul encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. He was on his way to find Christians to take to Jerusalem as prisoners.

After meeting Jesus, Saul (who changed his name to Paul) devoted his life to preaching the good news about Jesus Christ. You can read about Saul's conversion in Acts 9.

Many of the letters to churches (for example, Romans) in the New Testament were written by Paul.

For our craft activity, we drew happy and angry faces on paper plates (one on the back and one on the front).

Sunday, 25 January 2015

25th January

Continuing our theme of becoming a new creation in Christ, the junior class looked at the story of Zacchaeus. You can read about it here.

Zacchaeus was a wealthy tax collector. After meeting Jesus, he promised to give half of his money to the poor and to pay back four times the amount if he had cheated anyone out of anything.

We listened to a song about Zacchaeus. You can listen here.

We made models of Zacchaeus in the tree as our craft activity.

Many thanks to Jackie for providing this craft idea on her web page at http://www.blessingsoverflowing.com/

Sunday, 18 January 2015

18th January

Today, we looked at the story of Jesus and Nicodemus in John 3:1-21.

We often say that as Christians, we are 'born again'. Jesus told Nicodemus that he needed to be born again to see the kingdom of God.

We talked about what it meant to be 'born again' and we will spend some more time talking about this next week.

Saturday, 17 January 2015

11th January

Our text for the next three weeks is 2 Corinthians 5:17:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!
(New International Version - UK)

We watched a video of the song, 'Bullfrogs and Butterflies' by Barry McGuire. You can watch this here.

We talked about how tadpoles and caterpillars change completely during their lifetimes to become frogs and butterflies.

If we follow Jesus, He can make us like completely new people. We may not look very different on the outside, but we can change a lot on the inside as we become more like Jesus.

As a craft activity, we made butterflies with paper and paint to remind us of our text:

4th January 2015

Just a small group of us this week. We spent some time catching up on holiday news and talked about our New Year Resolutions. We made door hangers to remind us of the things we wanted to achieve this year.

21st December

We had a family service in the sanctuary this week, and the children performed their nativity play, 'No Room in the Inn'.

No Sunday School now until 4th January 2015.

14th December

This Sunday was spent rehearsing for our nativity play, 'No Room in the Inn', written by Labake Fakunle.
